SketchUp: The Quick and Dirty Modeler

SketchUp is a user-friendly option for early-stage design and simple visualizations. Some firms use this if they mostly use 2D software's and need to make a quick and simple 3D model of the building they're working on. However, it can serve as a tool for rendering and a visualization into how a space works and other details such as color choices and materials.  Its vast object library is a boon for adding lifelike elements to models. However, SketchUp's limitations in terms of detail and documentation make it less suitable for complex projects or construction document production. It's an excellent choice for beginners or firms primarily focused on 2D drafting.  Sketchup is a very accessible source with tiered pricing and features.  For those starting out on a budget it’s one of the few programs that offer a free version even if you aren’t a student.

AutoCAD: The Drafting Workhorse

AutoCAD, a veteran in the industry, is primarily a 2D drafting tool. While it offers 3D capabilities, its core strength lies in producing precise floor plans and construction documents. Like Revit, AutoCad is a great drafting tool that can be used in collaborative settings to make the work process easier amongst the team and in the field. Many consultants use AutoCAD as well, such as, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, plumbing engineers and electrical engineers.  A program across multiple trades makes it easier to exchange files.  AutoCAD's simplicity and widespread use among consultants make it a valuable asset in any architect's toolkit. However, with the rise of BIM software, AutoCAD's role is gradually evolving.

Rhino: The Design Artist

My personal favorite, Rhinoceros.  Rhinoceros is a program I used strictly in school.  I used it in both undergrad and graduate school and I’ve nearly become an expert at it.  This is a very common software used primarily in academic settings because it allows the user to be creative to the max. Rhino is a NURBS-based modeling software that empowers architects to create complex, free-form shapes. Its flexibility and precision make it a favorite among designers pushing the boundaries of form. While not ideal for construction documents, Rhino excels in conceptual design and architectural research. Its vast array of plugins, including Grasshopper for parametric design, opens up endless possibilities for experimentation.

Archicad: The Rising Star

Archicad is a BIM software gaining traction for its user-friendly interface and blend of Revit-like capabilities with Rhino-inspired flexibility. It offers a strong foundation for both conceptual design and construction documentation although not ideal when creating a full CD set. However, as a relatively new player, Archicad still has room for growth in terms of industry adoption and feature set.

While mastering these tools is crucial, it's equally important to remember that software is just a tool. A strong foundation in design principles, spatial reasoning, and building codes remains essential.
